Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park

Rising through the mist-covered highlands of northern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects one of Africa’s most extraordinary and intimate wildlife sanctuaries. A landscape of towering volcanic peaks, emerald forests, and drifting clouds, the park forms part of the greater Virunga Mountains, a chain of ancient volcanoes stretching across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Within these lush montane forests lives one of the world’s most remarkable creatures — the endangered Mountain Gorilla. Quiet, intelligent, and profoundly powerful, these great apes move gently through the bamboo forests and moss-covered slopes of the Virungas. Observing them in their natural habitat is among the most moving wildlife encounters on Earth.
Volcanoes National Park gained global recognition through the pioneering work of Dian Fossey, whose lifelong dedication to protecting mountain gorillas helped ensure their survival. Her research centre once stood deep within these forests, and her conservation legacy continues to shape the park today.
The landscape itself feels almost mythical. Steep volcanic ridges rise through layers of dense rainforest, bamboo groves, and open alpine meadows. Morning mist drifts between the slopes, creating a quiet and mystical atmosphere that perfectly reflects the park’s hidden wildlife.
Though most travellers arrive in search of gorillas, the park also shelters golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffalo, and an impressive array of birdlife. Combined with Rwanda’s exceptional conservation leadership and welcoming culture, Volcanoes National Park has become one of Africa’s most meaningful and transformative safari destinations.
